The Rock Pays Tribute To Brock Lesnar On 20-Year Anniversary Of SummerSlam Match

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has given Brock Lesnar a shout-out on the 20th anniversary of their iconic SummerSlam match.

Both men have spent years as the face of WWE, and Brock is still around, having recently headlined the aforementioned PPV in a loss to Roman Reigns that took just about everything to see The Tribal Chief over the line.

Lesnar and The Rock faced off in SummerSlam’s main event back in 2002. Brock was successful in his chase of the Undisputed WWE Championship back then.

The Rock, now a big-time Hollywood actor who churns movies out at an insane pace, took to Instagram this weekend to recall what was a remarkable match.

“20 years ago this week, we made history in New York and pro wrestling was never the same again,” he wrote. “The Rock vs Brock Lesnar. WWE UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH.

“I always had great chemistry with Brock as he was one of the greatest pure athletes I’ve ever danced with.

“We spent about 6 months wrestling around the world together, grooming Brock to become @WWE Heavyweight Champion.

“It culminated to this historic SUMMER SLAM PPV where the crowd was absolutely electric.”

The Rock’s WWE Career Was Relatively Short (For A Legend)

Johnson went on to explain why the match was historic, noting that he passed the baton on to Brock that night while also quietly retiring.

“It’s so wildly incomprehensible at times when I think back – that I only wrestled for 6 YEARS,” he continued.

“How crazy is that irony? A 6 YEAR CAREER. What a journey.

“I did return to wrestling from 2011 to 2013 as it was my way of giving back to the business that was so good to me + I just f’n love wrestling.”

The Rock has returned to WWE sporadically and it is hoped that he will show up for a match vs. his cousin and current Undisputed WWE Champion Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.
