Much to the delight of the WWE Universe, John Cena is coming back on TV by the end of this year. As confirmed by the WWE, during the December 9 episode of SmackDown, the last-of-its-kind franchise player of the WWE was announced to make his return to TV after more than six months. The below statement was provided on the official website of the company to hype things up while no such confirmation was there about the reason for his appearance,
“You can (and will) see him! As first reported by Variety, 16-time World Champion John Cena will appear on the final SmackDown of 2022.
What will The Leader of the Cenation have in store for the special year-end episode of SmackDown? Find out Dec. 30 at 8/7 C on FOX!”
The December 30th episode of SmackDown will take place at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida and it will also mark the final TV taping from WWE’s part for this year. As the company is willing to wrap things up on a big note, they’re also likely to drop a bombshell about their next big premium live event Royal Rumble 2023 with John Cena getting involved in the capacity for the annual January show.
John Cena to confirm his Royal Rumble entrance during SmackDown appearance
According to the reports of Xero News, The 16-time World Champion will announce his entry into the Men’s Royal Rumble 2023 Match during this upcoming SmackDown appearance. This will be the first time that the veteran will be seen in the 30-superstar melee since 2018. Also, this in-ring return also brightens up the possibility of seeing him back in action at WrestleMania 39.
John Cena’s last match on television in WWE took place at Summerslam 2021, where he lost to Universal Champion Roman Reigns in the main event match. Afterward, he appeared on the June 27 episode of RAW, where he celebrated his 20th anniversary in the company. Many hoped to get an update on his in-ring return that night but that wasn’t the case. Now, the current assumption is the big announcement should come on the December 30th episode of SmackDown.
Speaking of that night, it’s previously been reported that Bray Wyatt’s first match since his return to the WWE at Extreme Rules will also take place on the show. Going by the ongoing beef, it will be against LA Knight. But all eyes will now be upon John Cena and his potential confirmation on a Royal Rumble appearance for the 2023 edition that goes down from The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, January 28.
