Drew McIntyre Compares His WWE Rise To Rangers’ Resurgence

Drew McIntyre has compared his own WWE comeback story to his favourite football team Rangers climbing back to the top of Scottish football.

Clash At The Castle on September 3rd could prove to be the spectacular finale of the redemption story of Drew McIntyre.

Once christened the “Chosen One” big things were expected from the Scottish star when he signed with WWE in 2007. However, despite some success, McIntyre eventually found himself slipping down the card and was ultimately released in 2014. But as fans know, the Scottish Warrior’s story doesn’t end there.

Over the next three years McIntyre set about reinventing himself and eventually re-signed with WWE in 2017 going on to become NXT Champion. After winning the 2020 Royal Rumble, McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania to become WWE Champion for the first time. Despite this huge achievement, it remains tinged with ‘what might of been’ as the event took place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and without fans present.

Speaking in a new interview with Sky Football, McIntyre compared his comeback to that of his favourite football club Rangers. In 2012 after years of financial mis-management Rangers entered liquidation and all assets were eventually sold to a new company which became The Rangers Football Club Ltd.

After much negotiation, Rangers took their place in the Scottish third division for the 2012-2013 season. The club eventually rose back to the Scottish Premiership, winning the league in 2021.

“It’s amazing to see them back in the Champions League, after everything we’ve been through for the past over 10 years now. It’s interesting to watch my career and Rangers you know parallel each other. You know I get fired from WWE those who know my story, Rangers get relegated to the bottom league, every year I fought up, they fought up. Eventually, I became WWE Champion, Rangers won the title, stopped Celtic (Rangers’ rival team). So things are good for Drew, things are good for Rangers, it’s a good time all around.”

At Clash At The Castle Drew McIntyre will challenge Roman Reigns in a huge main event with the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on the line.
